#27 – July 30th 2007

Short and sweet…

I’ve recently been enjoying the company of three British soon-to-be doctors; Alison and Sarah hail from Scotland, Claire from Manchester, England. All three are in their final semester at Glasgow University and decided to do their practical at Mengo Hospital in Uganda. This past Friday they invited me to join them on a trip to Ssese Islands, a group of 84 islands off the north-western shore of Lake Victoria. A 3-hour ferry ride from the coast of Entebbe took us to Buggala Island, where we located Hornbill Campsite 500 meters from the dock. Our ‘campsite’ consisted of a forested grassy area dotted with tents and bandas (tents raised off the ground by wooden structures), that gave way to a breath-takingly beautiful white sand beach. Moments after arriving I was barefooted in the soft sand, drinking in the crimson sunset as it splashed across the calm clear water. Some local school boys watched from their perch around the blazing beach campfire while my friends and I wadded into the warm waters of the lake, completely elated to have found such a paradise. The remainder of the weekend was spent exploring Buggala’s tropical forests, lazing on the white sand, sipping cold Nile and enjoying a good read whilst swinging in hammocks, and kayaking around the bay. Not such a strenuous weekend to say the least.

I’ve posted a few pictures that barely do the island justice, view them at:
